Beef Sold In Connecticut Recalled for E.Coli Infection

In a statement released by DPH Spokeswoman Maura Downes, she said that the beef recalled originated in Adam’s Slaughterhouse, but they distributed their products to Connecticut farms and farmer’s market.

“This facility slaughters, processes, and packs beef products for some small producers here in Connecticut,” Downes said. “Some of these producers only sell their ground beef products directly at the farm or farmers’ markets throughout the state.”

The DPH conducted an investigation after the multi-state outbreak of E.Coli cases. The investigation revealed that the beef sickened two Connecticut residents. Fortunately, both residents have recovered from the infection.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture categorized the recall as Class I since it imposes high health risk. Some of E.Coli’s deadly symptoms include dehydration, bloody diarrhea, and abdominal cramps. While most of the patients diagnosed were able to recover, a few percentage suffers from kidney failure, pallor, and decreased urine output. They advised anyone who suffers from these symptoms to seek medical care immediately.

The DPH also encouraged customers who still have left-overs to check the agriculture packaging code. Adam’s Slaughterhouse Agriculture code number is #5497. The recall includes products bearing the package code above.

The Fast Metabolism Diet Community’s Friendly Reminder:

The community is urging everyone (especially around the Connecticut state) to call the local farmer and have the products returned or ask for a refund. Moreover, be careful with the products you purchased as cases of E.Coli is predominant recently.

Recall Alert! Cases of Hepatitis A Were Reported After Consumption of Frozen Strawberry Smoothies

If you’re fond of drinking “healthy strawberry smoothies” displayed in coffee shops, then beware and take heed! The CDC recently announced an outbreak of Hepatitis A that affects 55 people in 6 US states.

Recall Alert! Cases of Hepatitis A Were Reported After Consumption of Frozen Strawberry Smoothies

CDC Reports Cases of Hepatitis A After Consumption of Tropical Strawberry Smoothies

The local health authorities confirmed reports of 44 cases of Hepatitis infections in Virginia, Maryland with 4, 1 in North Carolina, 1 in Oregon and Wisconsin. 40 out of the 55 cases originated from a Tropical Smoothie Cafe in Virginia.

The 44 Virginia residents were hospitalized and infected with Hepatitis A after consuming the strawberry smoothie. The strawberries used in making the smoothie originated from Egypt, and suspected to be the carriers of the said virus. The Tropical Smoothies Cafe recalled all of its strawberry smoothies after the incident.

Since the symptoms of hepatitis A don’t show up quickly unlike food poisoning, the health authorities are encouraging everyone to watch for its impending symptoms. The symptoms cover jaundice, fatigue, fever, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, dark urine, light-colored stools and among others.

The affected Tropical Smoothie Cafe released a statement about the issue:

“The Virginia Department of Healthy notified us about several foodborne illnesses in the state linked to frozen strawberries sourced from Egypt. Our cafes and their food handling practices have not been implicated in any way – the health department believes this is a single product issue (strawberries) sourced from Egypt. Egyptian strawberries represent a fraction of our overall strawberries purchased and were predominantly distributed to stores in the Virginia market.

Today, our strawberries are primarily sourced from Mexico and California. However, in an abundance of caution, we voluntarily pulled all strawberries sourced from Egypt from every cafe in our system, not only the Virginia cafes. Our primary concern is for the safety and well-being of our guests and crew members and we will continue to cooperate with the health authorities.”

The community still recommends everyone to make their own smoothies rather than store-bought smoothies. We don’t know for sure how they handled the preparation of smoothies. We’re at risks of acquiring illness (like this).

Aside from that, these commercial smoothies contain artificial sweeteners that contribute to weight gain. You can check our natural fast metabolism diet smoothie recipes here.

Philadelphia: The First Major City to Tax Soft Drinks

We’ve all known how the health and fitness advocates are battling against the consumption of unhealthy soft drinks. The high concentration of sugar found in these processed drinks not only triggers our intense sugar craving but it also increases our risk of Type 2 Diabetes. Most health advocates strongly advises us to stop soda consumption as much as possible in order to improve our current lifestyle and well-being.

Philadelphia Tax Soft Drinks

If you still find yourself having a hard time reducing your soft drinks intake, this news might encourage you to stop consuming it.

Philadelphia has become the first major city in the United States to slap a 1.5 cent-per-ounce tax on sugary drinks in which many cities like New York, City of Brotherly Love have failed to pursue. The city council voted 13-4 in favor of taxing sugary drinks.

The Philadelphia tax was marked as one of the major victories for health advocates who are leading a movement against giant soda manufacturers. This victory could stir up movement in Oakland, San Francisco, and Colorado as they vote on similar taxes this coming November this year. If the result of all cities will be deemed positive, it is projected to create a fatal blow to the soft drink’s industry.

Interestingly, the positive health impact that came from the tax campaign was not Philadelphia Mayor Kenney’s primary concern. His campaign pledge was to provide a universal pre-kindergarten. The funds that will be used in supporting the program will come from taxation. And the taxing on sugary drinks just happened to be the best option to raise the revenue. The Mayor stated in the rewritten version of soda-tax advocate playbook that the tax is projected to raise up to $91 million in its first year, which will be used in funding the program.

The Fast Metabolism Diet Community’s Opinion:

Mayor Kenney may have a different path in pursuing this movement, but it is no doubt that the health industry of Philadelphia will greatly benefit from this. More taxes on sodas could mean less consumption. Most Americans will be encouraged to patronize healthier drinks, improving their health and well-being in the process.

FDA Approved the Consumption of GMO Salmon: Is it Really Safe?

Salmon has earned its reputation as one of the healthiest fish in the world because of its amazing health benefits. Salmon is packed with omega-3 that fatty acid that is good for our heart and lowers down our adrenaline and cortisol levels. The DHA fatty acid found in Salmon also helps reduce our risks in ARMD (Age-Related Macular Degeneration) and improves our eyesight. It also promotes healthy hormone balance in our body, especially in our thyroid and adrenal glands. In the fast metabolism diet, Salmon is strongly advised to be part in the diet especially in Phase 3. It’s because Salmon is a known source of healthy fats.

FDA Approved the Consumption of GMO Salmon

However, the health and environmental advocates are in hype again as the controversy of FDA’s approval on GMO salmon emerged. Let us hear more about the news below:

Last Thursday, the Food and Drug Administration approved the production of fast-growing fish salmon named as AquaAdvantage salmon created by AquaBounty technologies. A new gene was said to be inserted to the fertilized salmon eggs to boost the production of fish growth hormone. Resulting to a fast-growing salmon than its conventional, farm-raised counterpart.

The FDA’s scientific advisers concluded that the genetic engineering being done on the salmon is safe to eat and won’t contribute any harm to the environment.

“Basically, nothing in the data suggested that these fish were in any way unsafe or different to the farm-raised salmon,” – Alison Van Eenennaam, biotechnology specialist at the University of California said.

Throughout the history, the AquaAdvantage salmon is the first genetically modified animal that was approved by FDA for human consumption. The Food and Drug agency also said that there’s no reason to label it as different from the other salmons out in the market.

The FDA is requiring the AquaBounty to take precautionary measures to ensure the fish won’t get into the ocean and compete with wild salmons. They are only allowed to raise the fish on two sites– Canada and Panama. The company also ensures that the fish will be sterile. So that if the fish will escape into the ocean, they will fail to reproduce.

This move from FDA, however, had raised negative reactions from health advocates.

“This frankenfish, this GMO salmon, should not be approved, and shouldn’t have been approved,” says Dana Perls, a campaigner with the environmental group Friends of the Earth.

“We are deeply disappointed with the FDA’s decision to approve the AquaAdvantage salmon,” Michael Hansen, senior scientist with Consumers Union, said in a statement. “And it’s even more concerning that the FDA chose not to require any form of labeling, making it extremely difficult for consumers to know if the salmon is GE or not.”

Several big grocery stores have also promised not to sell this GMO salmon– including Safeway, Kroger, Target, Trader’s Joe’s, Whole Foods, Aldi, and others.

opinion

The Fast Metabolism Diet Community ‘s Stand:

Like all the other health advocates, we also firmly believe that the production of GMO salmon should be stopped and have never been approved in the first place. GMO foods that contain pesticides and hormones that alter the biological process of animals will be nothing but unhealthy. Healthy fish such as salmon should be treated with utmost care. GMO foods also contaminate our body and ruins our health. So in this community, we still opt for the naturally produced one. If it is not safe for the ocean, how come it can be safe to our body? We urged the producers to label them for the sake of the consumers. How about you? Where do you stand in this issue?
