Recall Alert! Beef Sold In Connecticut Recalled After 2 Residents Were Hospitalized for E.Coli Infection

The Department of Public Health and Safety issued a recall on Adams Farm Slaughterhouse LLC’s beef, veal, and bison products after the hospitalization of two Connecticut residents for E.Coli infection.

Beef Sold In Connecticut Recalled for E.Coli Infection

In a statement released by DPH Spokeswoman Maura Downes, she said that the beef recalled originated in Adam’s Slaughterhouse, but they distributed their products to Connecticut farms and farmer’s market.

“This facility slaughters, processes, and packs beef products for some small producers here in Connecticut,” Downes said. “Some of these producers only sell their ground beef products directly at the farm or farmers’ markets throughout the state.”

The DPH conducted an investigation after the multi-state outbreak of E.Coli cases. The investigation revealed that the beef sickened two Connecticut residents. Fortunately, both residents have recovered from the infection.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture categorized the recall as Class I since it imposes high health risk. Some of E.Coli’s deadly symptoms include dehydration, bloody diarrhea, and abdominal cramps. While most of the patients diagnosed were able to recover, a few percentage suffers from kidney failure, pallor, and decreased urine output. They advised anyone who suffers from these symptoms to seek medical care immediately.

The DPH also encouraged customers who still have left-overs to check the agriculture packaging code. Adam’s Slaughterhouse Agriculture code number is #5497. The recall includes products bearing the package code above.

The Fast Metabolism Diet Community’s Friendly Reminder:

The community is urging everyone (especially around the Connecticut state) to call the local farmer and have the products returned or ask for a refund. Moreover, be careful with the products you purchased as cases of E.Coli is predominant recently.

Recall Alert! Cases of Hepatitis A Were Reported After Consumption of Frozen Strawberry Smoothies

If you’re fond of drinking “healthy strawberry smoothies” displayed in coffee shops, then beware and take heed! The CDC recently announced an outbreak of Hepatitis A that affects 55 people in 6 US states.

Recall Alert! Cases of Hepatitis A Were Reported After Consumption of Frozen Strawberry Smoothies

CDC Reports Cases of Hepatitis A After Consumption of Tropical Strawberry Smoothies

The local health authorities confirmed reports of 44 cases of Hepatitis infections in Virginia, Maryland with 4, 1 in North Carolina, 1 in Oregon and Wisconsin. 40 out of the 55 cases originated from a Tropical Smoothie Cafe in Virginia.

The 44 Virginia residents were hospitalized and infected with Hepatitis A after consuming the strawberry smoothie. The strawberries used in making the smoothie originated from Egypt, and suspected to be the carriers of the said virus. The Tropical Smoothies Cafe recalled all of its strawberry smoothies after the incident.

Since the symptoms of hepatitis A don’t show up quickly unlike food poisoning, the health authorities are encouraging everyone to watch for its impending symptoms. The symptoms cover jaundice, fatigue, fever, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, dark urine, light-colored stools and among others.

The affected Tropical Smoothie Cafe released a statement about the issue:

“The Virginia Department of Healthy notified us about several foodborne illnesses in the state linked to frozen strawberries sourced from Egypt. Our cafes and their food handling practices have not been implicated in any way – the health department believes this is a single product issue (strawberries) sourced from Egypt. Egyptian strawberries represent a fraction of our overall strawberries purchased and were predominantly distributed to stores in the Virginia market.

Today, our strawberries are primarily sourced from Mexico and California. However, in an abundance of caution, we voluntarily pulled all strawberries sourced from Egypt from every cafe in our system, not only the Virginia cafes. Our primary concern is for the safety and well-being of our guests and crew members and we will continue to cooperate with the health authorities.”

The Fast Metabolism Diet Community’s Opinion

The community still recommends everyone to make their own smoothies rather than store-bought smoothies. We don’t know for sure how they handled the preparation of smoothies. We’re at risks of acquiring illness (like this).

Aside from that, these commercial smoothies contain artificial sweeteners that contribute to weight gain. You can check our natural fast metabolism diet smoothie recipes here.

Philadelphia: The First Major City to Tax Soft Drinks

We’ve all known how the health and fitness advocates are battling against the consumption of unhealthy soft drinks. The high concentration of sugar found in these processed drinks not only triggers our intense sugar craving but it also increases our risk of Type 2 Diabetes. Most health advocates strongly advises us to stop soda consumption as much as possible in order to improve our current lifestyle and well-being.

Philadelphia Tax Soft Drinks

If you still find yourself having a hard time reducing your soft drinks intake, this news might encourage you to stop consuming it.

Philadelphia has become the first major city in the United States to slap a 1.5 cent-per-ounce tax on sugary drinks in which many cities like New York, City of Brotherly Love have failed to pursue. The city council voted 13-4 in favor of taxing sugary drinks.

The Philadelphia tax was marked as one of the major victories for health advocates who are leading a movement against giant soda manufacturers. This victory could stir up movement in Oakland, San Francisco, and Colorado as they vote on similar taxes this coming November this year. If the result of all cities will be deemed positive, it is projected to create a fatal blow to the soft drink’s industry.

Interestingly, the positive health impact that came from the tax campaign was not Philadelphia Mayor Kenney’s primary concern. His campaign pledge was to provide a universal pre-kindergarten. The funds that will be used in supporting the program will come from taxation. And the taxing on sugary drinks just happened to be the best option to raise the revenue. The Mayor stated in the rewritten version of soda-tax advocate playbook that the tax is projected to raise up to $91 million in its first year, which will be used in funding the program.

The Fast Metabolism Diet Community’s Opinion:

Mayor Kenney may have a different path in pursuing this movement, but it is no doubt that the health industry of Philadelphia will greatly benefit from this. More taxes on sodas could mean less consumption. Most Americans will be encouraged to patronize healthier drinks, improving their health and well-being in the process.

These chemicals are toxic as our body converts these chemicals into carcinogens, which increases our risks on acquiring cancer diseases.

However, most of us find the expiration dates on the food labels confusing. What do these expiration dates exactly mean? Is it highly discourage to consume these foods beyond its expiration dates? Does expiration dates affect our food and health safety? In this blog post, we will address this important issue and help you ease your confusion and anxiety. Let’s discuss the truth behind these expiration dates.

  best if use    best before

  1. Use-By, Best if Used by, Best By, Best Before

These terms are generally found in shelf stable products such as mustard, mayonnaise and peanut butter. These terms generally tells you how long the product will be at its best quality when unopened. After the “expiration date” has passed, you will start to notice some gradual changes on the unopened product, such as its texture, color, appearance or flavor.

But it doesn’t mean that this product is now dangerous for consumption. As long as you’re following the standard and optimal food storage guidelines, you can generally consume these foods beyond its given date.

Tip: Remember to always discard the foods with foul odor, flavor or appearance.

sell

  1. Sell By

This term is generally found on perishable products like meat, seafood, poultry and milk. The date displayed on these foods served as a guide for the store owners to know how long they can display a particular product.

Tip: It is important that you buy these products before the sell-by date expires. Keep in mind that you can still store and consume these products as long as you follow safety storage guidelines.

For example, you can generally consume a milk for about a week after the Sell By date had passed, given that it has been refrigerated well.

expiration date

  1. Expires On

You will likely encounter this term on infant formulas and baby foods. In this case, it is important to always use the product before its expiration date passed.
