10 Food and Drinks that are Unexpectedly High in Sugar

sugar-feat-image

Too much of anything is not good for our health. Especially consuming too much food and drinks that are high in sugar; this can lead to diseases like diabetes. A lot of us are carefully watching our consumption, but there are some food and drinks we wouldn’t expect to contain lots of sugar. We only expect that it needs to be sweet for the food to be considered as high in sugar. Some products that are labeled as “low-fat” and “light” actually contains more sugar than the regular one’s. So here are food and drinks you didn’t know that contains too much sugar:

  1. “Low-Fat Yogurt”

lowfat yogurt

Although yogurt is rich in nutrients, not all of them are good for you. There are a lot of so called low-fat yogurts that has too much sugar in them to enhance their flavor. A single cup can contain as much as 47 grams of sugar. Its better to have full-fat or Greek yogurt since it has more nutrients compared to low-fat and yogurt that has been sweetened with sugar.

  1. Ketchup

ketchup

This is unexpected for most of us, but this popular condiment is actually rich in sugar. Keep your portions smaller when using ketchup. A tablespoon of ketchup contains 1 teaspoon of sugar.

  1. Sports Drinks

sport drinks

These may seem to be a healthy option for most of us who are into an active lifestyle and sports. Although they are designed to hydrate and fuel the body, sport drinks actually has added sugars in them that are absorbed and used for energy. They are categorized as “sugary drinks” like soda and fruit juice, and are linked to obesity and metabolic disease. A 20-oz bottle can have 32 grams of sugar and 159 calories. It’s better to stick with water when you exercise, unless you’re an elite athlete or running a marathon.

  1. Granola

granola

Even though it is high in calories and sugar granola is often marketed as a low-fat health food. It contains oats as the main ingredient which has protein, fiber, carbs and fat. Despite that granola also contains honey and other sweeteners that add up to the amount of sugar and calories. 100 grams of granola can have as much as 6 teaspoons of sugar. Choose granola that has less sugar or try making your own. Mix it with fruits or yogurt, rather than consuming the whole bowl.

  1. Protein Bars

Fruits have natural sugars in them. Canned fruits are sometimes peeled and added with sugary syrups to preserve them. Despite being a healthy snack, the process actually lessens the fiber in the fruit and increase the amount of unnecessary sugar in them. Canning also destroys Vitamin C since its heat-sensitive. Having a whole, fresh fruit is better than eating canned one’s. Opt for canned fruit preserved in juice rather than syrup, since it has lower sugar content.

  1. Barbecue Sauce

bbq sauce

Popularly used as a marinade and even as a dip, barbecue sauce contains sugar as well. 2 tablespoons of it can have 14 grams of sugar. 6 Ways Your Brain Can Help You Lose Weight

imag-art-2

We are generally informed that our diet affects a lot of facets of our lives, from our keeping our skin glowing to heart health, from being at our best in terms of physical performance and energy to having a fuller hair. Based on his book Eat Complete: The 21 Nutrients That Fuel Brainpower, Boost Weight Loss, and Transform Your Health Dr. Drew Ramsey found that our diet has a direct effect on our brain health, he wrote” food plane designed to deliver optimal brain health by asking eaters to focus on the 21 most important nutrients for brain health, claiming that eating whole, natural foods that contain the highest concentration of these nutrients will lead to a healthy weight.”

  1. Brain growth is equivalent to weight loss. Ramsey explained that weight loss and brain health are closely connected, there are certain natural brain compounds are crucial for weight regulation. “Brain health depends on a set of natural compounds like the brain growth factor BDNF and the hormone melatonin,” Ramsey stated “These are both critical to weight regulation and the speed of your metabolism. Eating foods that promote the production of these molecules in the brain is the key to a healthy weight.”
  2. Brain food has lesser calories. Calculating calories to achieve you weight goals has been a common practice over the decades, but Ramsey says we should not go thru our weight loss in this manner, or for only simply cutting the pounds. “Your brain cells are your hungriest so feed them first. The brain burns 20 percent of what you eat. Seeking brain nutrients leads an eater to a core of foods that are very nutrient dense, and thus lower in calories.”
  3. Lessen moody eating. Have you heard about emotional eating? Whether you’re feeling down about missing your promotion in work or mourning the loss of someone close to you, eating to cope up with painful emotion is pretty common, but Dr. Ramsey warns us against this. “Better brain health and more mindful eating means less anxiety and a more stable mood. This translates to eating because you love food and are hungry, not because your brain is twitchy from missing key nutrients in your diet,” Ramsey said that. “Better brain health is vital to focus, mood and sleep.”
  4. Better bug in you. The bacteria in our bodies is an important part for preventing infections, diseases and keeping a totally healthy immune system, in that part what we eat will reflect in our bodies. According to Dr. Ramsey, bacteria and other microorganisms in our gut, that includes yeast, viruses and parasites, tells a lot about weight and overall health, a healthier gut is equal to healthier brain. “To feed the ‘Good Bugs’ that keep us running lean and healthy,” Ramsey says “ eaters should steer their food choice to more colorful plants, i.e. ‘ Eat the rainbow’ and get more fermented foods like yogurt, kefir, and kombucha.”
  5. No ‘carbage’. There are two kinds of carbs, the good ones and the bad, it is essential to consume the right stuff into our bodies. Generally known that highly processed foods are no good, and Ramsey says, “The healthiest brains have one thing in common. No highly processed foods. This is key because it eliminates the sugars, refined carbs, vegetable oils, toxins, preservatives, trans fats that are the true culprits in our health crisis.” He recommends having wholesome meals like eggs, kale or a blueberry, kefir and nut smoothie for breakfast rather than a low-fat cereal or toaster strudel.
  6. Healthy brains feel fuller. Achieving that moment when you’re actually feeling full and not bloated, can be hard a thing to do. Sometime it’s either you not nearly full enough or you are too much and now feeling uncomfortable. “Eating for brain health gives eaters a nice mix of fats, proteins, and complex carbs that leads to optimal satiety,” Dr. Ramsey stated. “ Feeling full and content is key to a healthy weight.”

Recall Alert! Beef Sold In Connecticut Recalled After 2 Residents Were Hospitalized for E.Coli Infection

The Department of Public Health and Safety issued a recall on Adams Farm Slaughterhouse LLC’s beef, veal, and bison products after the hospitalization of two Connecticut residents for E.Coli infection.

Beef Sold In Connecticut Recalled for E.Coli Infection

In a statement released by DPH Spokeswoman Maura Downes, she said that the beef recalled originated in Adam’s Slaughterhouse, but they distributed their products to Connecticut farms and farmer’s market.

“This facility slaughters, processes, and packs beef products for some small producers here in Connecticut,” Downes said. “Some of these producers only sell their ground beef products directly at the farm or farmers’ markets throughout the state.”

The DPH conducted an investigation after the multi-state outbreak of E.Coli cases. The investigation revealed that the beef sickened two Connecticut residents. Fortunately, both residents have recovered from the infection.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture categorized the recall as Class I since it imposes high health risk. Some of E.Coli’s deadly symptoms include dehydration, bloody diarrhea, and abdominal cramps. While most of the patients diagnosed were able to recover, a few percentage suffers from kidney failure, pallor, and decreased urine output. They advised anyone who suffers from these symptoms to seek medical care immediately.

The DPH also encouraged customers who still have left-overs to check the agriculture packaging code. Adam’s Slaughterhouse Agriculture code number is #5497. The recall includes products bearing the package code above.

The Fast Metabolism Diet Community’s Friendly Reminder:

The community is urging everyone (especially around the Connecticut state) to call the local farmer and have the products returned or ask for a refund. Moreover, be careful with the products you purchased as cases of E.Coli is predominant recently.

When Should You Go Wheat-Free or Gluten-Free?

We are well aware that wheat is not allowed in the FMD program. It is highly discouraged to consume it and its other variants. This is due to the fact that wheat is nearly indestructible in our body. As a result, our body will have a hard time digesting it, making it hard to function in healing our metabolism.

Eating wheat can cause bloating, irritated intestinal tract, fatigue, and inflammation. These nasty side effects can leave you feeling irritated and ill. Aside from that, eating wheat can be destructive to those who are gluten-intolerant.

When Should You Go Wheat-Free or Gluten-Free

But did you know that wheat-free doesn’t mean that it’s also gluten-free? Some of the approved grain and starchy products in the fast metabolism diet may contain a little amount of gluten, but it has no overall effects on your weight loss process.

But for those people who have celiac disease, consuming just a little amount of gluten can be menace to their health. In fact, you can conclude that fast metabolism diet is wheat-free, but not totally gluten-free.

The Difference between Wheat-free vs. Gluten-free

If you have a wheat allergy, you are most likely to experience swelling of throats. itchy skin, nasal congestion, difficulty breathing, cramps, etc. This type of allergy can develop during infancy. Most people outgrow this allergy from ages 3-5, but for some, this can be a lifelong disorder.

wheat allergy

If you have an allergy, then it is imperative to never consume all kinds of wheat products as much as possible. And since most processed foods have wheat and gluten in it, you can conclude that you’ve almost eliminated the main source of gluten.

But, take note, the keyword here is almost. Almost, but not entirely. It’s because wheat is not the only food where we can source gluten.

Gluten is also present in barley, rye, spelt, and more. Gluten intolerance is the inability of our body to digest gluten and damage our small intestine. Celiac Disease is the highest form of gluten sensitivity. People with Celiac Disease cannot consume a gluten at all.

gluten free

For the moment gluten entered into your system, your body treat it as an invader that cause an immune assault and damage your small intestine. And since your small intestine is where it absorbs most nutrients that enter our body, it will have a hard time absorbing it if our small intestine is damaged. This can lead to malnutrition and inevitably, death.

When Should I Go Wheat-Free, Gluten-Free?

Going Wheat-free, or gluten-free is incredibly easy in the fast metabolism diet. After all, we already eliminated wheat in the diet. But as you may know, food manufacturers are sneaky. They try to hide it in disguised ingredients making us unaware about it. Try to look out for possible variants of wheat:

  • semolina
  • triticale
  • seitan
  • bread flour
  • farina
  • couscous
  • bulgur
  • malt
  • malt extract
  • matzo
  • graham flour

If you have celiac disease, we recommend you omit eating gluten at all. Omit rye, Spelt, and barley to your diet. You can replace them with gluten-free grain options you can find in the diet such as:

There is an enormous benefit we can get out of a wheat-free and gluten-free diet. It is extremely iterated in the program that applying this kind of eating habit will make a positive impact in our health through boosting our metabolism first.

Recall Alert! Cases of Hepatitis A Were Reported After Consumption of Frozen Strawberry Smoothies

If you’re fond of drinking “healthy strawberry smoothies” displayed in coffee shops, then beware and take heed! The CDC recently announced an outbreak of Hepatitis A that affects 55 people in 6 US states.

Recall Alert! Cases of Hepatitis A Were Reported After Consumption of Frozen Strawberry Smoothies

CDC Reports Cases of Hepatitis A After Consumption of Tropical Strawberry Smoothies

The local health authorities confirmed reports of 44 cases of Hepatitis infections in Virginia, Maryland with 4, 1 in North Carolina, 1 in Oregon and Wisconsin. 40 out of the 55 cases originated from a Tropical Smoothie Cafe in Virginia.

The 44 Virginia residents were hospitalized and infected with Hepatitis A after consuming the strawberry smoothie. The strawberries used in making the smoothie originated from Egypt, and suspected to be the carriers of the said virus. The Tropical Smoothies Cafe recalled all of its strawberry smoothies after the incident.

Since the symptoms of hepatitis A don’t show up quickly unlike food poisoning, the health authorities are encouraging everyone to watch for its impending symptoms. The symptoms cover jaundice, fatigue, fever, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, dark urine, light-colored stools and among others.

The affected Tropical Smoothie Cafe released a statement about the issue:

“The Virginia Department of Healthy notified us about several foodborne illnesses in the state linked to frozen strawberries sourced from Egypt. Our cafes and their food handling practices have not been implicated in any way – the health department believes this is a single product issue (strawberries) sourced from Egypt. Egyptian strawberries represent a fraction of our overall strawberries purchased and were predominantly distributed to stores in the Virginia market.

Today, our strawberries are primarily sourced from Mexico and California. However, in an abundance of caution, we voluntarily pulled all strawberries sourced from Egypt from every cafe in our system, not only the Virginia cafes. Our primary concern is for the safety and well-being of our guests and crew members and we will continue to cooperate with the health authorities.”

The Fast Metabolism Diet Community’s Opinion

The community still recommends everyone to make their own smoothies rather than store-bought smoothies. We don’t know for sure how they handled the preparation of smoothies. We’re at risks of acquiring illness (like this).

Aside from that, these commercial smoothies contain artificial sweeteners that contribute to weight gain. You can check our natural fast metabolism diet smoothie recipes here.

Zika Virus Found on Mosquitoes Around Miami Beach Area: Test Confirmed

The first case of Zika Virus in America was recorded in Wynwood, a neighborhood in Miami. Although the case outbreak seemed to have subsided, the CDC public health officials advised pregnant women not to travel there.

ZIKA VIRUS FOUND ON MOSQUITOES AROUND MIAMI BEACH AREA- TEST CONFIRMED.

Existence of Zika Virus Around Miami Beach Florida

The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services conducted a test on mosquitoes from 1.5 square-mile around Miami Beach to confirm the existence of the virus  around the area. Much to our dismay, the local authorities announced last Thursday the confirmation of the existence of the virus.

The Zika virus primarily affects the women, especially the pregnant ones. Its symptoms range from rashes, joint pain, and severe brain damages to fetuses. Around 16 babies out of 1500 infected pregnant women was born with birth defects.

As of now, the Zika virus is only circulating around Florida. The authorities are hopeful that the virus won’t spread explosively in the United States as compared to Latin America and the Caribbean. This is because Americans live in a less crowded place and usually have window screens and air conditioning, making it difficult for the mosquitoes to spread the virus.

“The good news is the weekly number of new cases isn’t changing much,” Dr. Weaver said. “If we were seeing at first five cases a week, then 10, 20 and then 100, we’d be very concerned.”

Nevertheless, the local authorities warned the public, especially the pregnant women, to minimize going out in public places to avoid acquiring the virus. Governor Rick Scott also assured that funds are available if CDC would conduct an aerial spraying. The CDC recommended spraying Miami Beach using helicopters.

But as to when it would happen, it still remains unclear. The Miami Beach City Commissioner Michael Grieco said that it’s not practical considering the geography of the area. There are high buildings everywhere. Some residents are also opposed to spraying, he added.

FMD Community’s Opinion and Call Out:

The community hopes that the Zika Virus will stop spreading around the country. We are calling out to all fast metabolism dieters– especially the pregnant women, to minimize going to public areas to prevent chances of acquiring an infection. Let us all be vigilant and keep yourself and your little bundle of joy healthy at all times.
